When considering the out-of-the-box experience of the app and site, there was much discussion around planning a trip versus being on one. "Where to?" was universal and translatable enough to cover both cases in over 30 countries.

Travelers could use the geo-pill at any point to search for a destination, jump to a recently-viewed destination, or see what's nearby.

Scrolling Home, category links stayed within reach, while content gave an overview of the destination. Local dining options, popular neighborhoods, flight rates, and articles provided context to help the traveler determine if this would be an interesting trip for them.

ta-nearby

Browsing Home in Nearby mode, map-view was a priority, displaying markers for hotels, restaurants, and things to do. Zoom level and review data made popular options stand out. Dining suggestions were made based on the time of day and proximity to the traveler.

In proposing new list navigations, our challenge was to use consistent UI patterns across list types while addressing each product group’s needs. Date-scoping was a constant need, so we identified variable booking needs for each group—restaurant reservations needed a single date, time, and guest count, while booking a hotel required a date range, room count, and guest count.

Across groups, easy access to filters and a map view persisted.

Through machine learning, frequently-used keywords and phrases populated the Keyphrase Cloud, providing the traveler a quick way to get a sense of a property’s notable features. They could also click a phrase to quickly filter reviews with the topics most helpful to them.

This project was a large effort across teams, offices, and disciplines. It would be difficult to name everyone involved, but here are some of the folks I was fortunate enough to work closely with at various phases of the project(s):
